The beginning of the finish

It's all in. All the hype. All the marketing. HALO 3 is is finally here.

Yes I got my copy and yes I've played about 3 hours worth of the campaign. It's hard. I got my ass kicked for a good 45 minutes just trying to get across a bridge with some very weak weapons against cats with much bigger guns and stuff.

I eventually made and now I'm stuck in a base attempting to pick off bad guys from a distance.

In any event I noticed something interesting the other night while scouring the Internet in search of Halo release news.

Nobody was streaming or uploading video as soon as they shot it.

In Bellevue, WA where Bill Gates sold the first copy and members of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners shows up, Cory Bergman of King 5 and Lostremote.com was "live blogging" on Citizen Rain but no one as far as I could see was uploading video.

Bergman pointed out the local TV affiliates were there and even G4 TV was there but neither one was streaming online. Neither was cutting short packages and uploading on location to their respective web sites.

I checked around a little more toady and Cnet, which pushed it's Cnet TV into Beta 2.0, had a news package from Manhattan but as far as I know had nothing of the "right here, right now" variety.

The content itself wasn't all that compelling either. It was your typical "fans outside and excited." Nothing behind the scenes. Nothing from the retailers perspective ,etc.

If I was running Cnet or another online gaming site like IGN or G4 or GameTrailers I would have picked a cool location or two and had two teams at each location during multiple packages. One talent for each location with a crew and a one-man-band per location. Had the talent covering the outside and the one-man-band on the inside. How are retailers preparing, when did they get the shipments, etc.

Instead I got "live blogging" a couple of uploaded photos and some after the fact reports.

If the Internet and niche sites are ever going to get the leg up, drive traffic and be profitable then they need to get on the ball and revise some old lessons. Or at the very least hire some people who know what there doing.

Beat Louisville get fined 25k

The University of Kentucky beat the University of Louisville on Saturday night in Lexington by a score of 40-34. Afterwards the Kentucky students rushed the field in a joyous daze as they beat their in state rival for the first time in 4 years and their first victory over a top 10 school in 30 years.

What do they get in return? A $25,000 fine by the Southeastern Conference. Apparently it's a league policy designed, I'm sure for the safety of the players, fans, staff's etc.

Fair enough.

But if I'm Kentucky or whoever else in the SEC and we just won a game as big as this I'm sure the athletic department will be happy to pay.

Another one on his way out

In some circles Eddie Johnson is the most gifted American on the US National Team. He's a striker who if he's on...watch out. If he's off, well let's just say he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

In any event he's having a tremendous year in MLS scoring some 14 times already this season in just 18 games.

Earlier this year he was rumored to be heading off to Portugal to play there but MLS and the Portugese club could not come to an agreement. Now it appears that during the January transfer window Mr. Johnson could be heading off to play in the England Premiership.

If this happens it would be great for the 23 year old Johnson but bad for the MLS.

Yes the MLS signed Beckham, Juan Pablo Angel, Blanco, and Fred among others but the same week it signed Beckham it lost another great young player in Clint Dempsey to Fulham FC.

This year alone the MLS has lost such up and comers as Dempsey,Freddy Adu, and Danny Szetela to European Clubs. With Eddie Johnson apparently set to jump ove rto Europe as well this would once again prove that the MLS is not the place to seek fortune and challenges on the pitch.

Muni Wi-Fi slowly fading away?

Chicago has put on hold plans to blanket the city in a wi-fi cloud claiming that the prices for broadband have come down enough for people and that there are plenty of public spaces where people can jump online.

Earthlink is killing plans to build out a network in San Francisco and is also cutting back jobs.

Earthlink looked to be a major player in the muni wi-fi game striking deals with several cities to bring low cost, wireless broadband to low income areas. It appears that the costs are too much and the plan is not really economically viable.

It is a shame.

I still believe in this idea. Wi-fi and soon Wi-Max will give the ability to shoot out and cover massive areas with high speed access. People who could not afford high speed access before might now be able too which is a good thing. Yes someone has to pick up the tab and the idea was that through advertising and people who would subscribe for access to higher speeds would be the ones to do that.

But this is capitalism and in the end someone is going to half to monetarily profit. Are the economics there yet? Probably not and certainly not for a company like Earhtlink and it's current financial situation. But for a larger company with more capital could see this as an idea before it's time.

flying the virgin skies

gatwick airport is about an hour south of east london on the motorway. everything runs better than expected until i go to check in.
my carry on bag, between my laptop and the bag itself it weighed like 16kg. it can only weigh 6.
long story short i have a little diddy bag and check all of the rest of the stuff.
the guy told me that the weight limits are virgins rules but he let me slide on paying. why they lt me on with my stuff in vegas without weighing it is beyond me and possibly even the airline.

Thoughts in UK

I have about 14 hours until I depart London for Las Vegas. 14 hours to sit on an airline for another 10.
At least airlines and hotels understand international business. Apparently American banks have yet to figure out the global information economy. My credit card was declined while shopping today. So I call  (the US number because the International one doens't work) and end up going round and round with people because they claim that in order for them to turn off the fraud protection I should have called them before I went to London.
Ok, fine. Then why did my card work in Manchester and Belfast earlier this year without incident I asked them. They told me that they couldn't explain it.
Some fraud protection.

Moments of suspended time

It's never good when you show up to an international flight an they then tell you that the flight is delayed another 2 hours.

But I digress.

Speaking of travelling, I was in Berkeley,CA this past weekend to watch Tennessee lose to Cal. On a bighter note, Michigan lost to App. St., I saw a group of hippies living in a tree outside Cal's stadium and Cal's stadium is straight ghetto when compared to the temple of college football Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

Also on the travelling side, Clint Dempsey who is from Texas and plays on the US National team scored again this past weekend for Fulham FC in England.

My current travels take me to London (at some point this Labor Day evening) where I will be for a week. I return for a week to Vegas then head to Anaheim for a week back for a week then off to Tennessee on vacation then bacck for a week then off to Cincinnati for a week.

And somewhere in there I am trying to close on a house.
