12月27日 Cyber AgeAm I the only one who's annoyed with video on the web? Hosts who all try to be Jon Stewart or Stephan Colbert. Dude, you're not funny nor are you witty. Quit It! The everyday person now seems more concerned about recording the actual moment than actually living it. Taking a picture or blogging about it while it's happening so that everyone else can know about right now. Including the person standing next to you. 12月21日 Tough times in the world of sportThe NFL, NBA,NASCAR, and MLB Interactive* have all cut jobs. The NHL and MLB have hiring freezes in place while MLB went a step further and cut vacation time. The Arena Football League has gone even further by canceling the 2009 season citing financial difficulties and the need for a new business model. Believe it or not the AFL has been around for 22 seasons. The owners sound optimistic about being able to play in 2010 however others are not. The interesting part is that the AFL seemed to be gaining some traction. Attendance and ratings have been up with a year old ESPN deal yet some teams, like the New Orleans Voodoo had already folded before the announcement of the cancellation. Being with a sports organization, what intrigues me about these layoffs, hiring freezes and canceled seasons is what's going. The NBA only cut US jobs and still expects to grow internationally. The NFL, while nixing plans to play a preseason game in China next season have already announced another game in London for next year and played a preseason game in Toronto. The AFL however signed over all of their interactive opportunities to ESPN in a 5 year deal that covered Internet, radio, publishing, and international distribution. All big growth areas for the league. Hopefully the AFL plays football again just for the players sake. *(MLB Interactive was spun off by MLB a few years ago and runs other web sites including MLSnet.com and ICE Network) 12月18日 Holy Crap...massive snow in VegasI always complain that there's no weather here in Vegas. There's hot and sunny and more often than not wind Well over the last few days we've had freezing temperatures and a boat load of snow. By my brothers house in Henderson he got something like 7 inches of snow. It got to a point yesterday where Southwest Airlines canceled every flight in and out of Vegas yesterday. 12月14日 Quick HitsSam Bradford, QB at for the Oklahoma Sooners, won the Heisman Trophy. Colt McCory must want to die. Not only did his team get robbed of a chance to play for the National Title but he gets screwed out of the Heisman. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Auburn hired Gene Chizik as its next head coach. Chizik was the defensive coordinator at Auburn between 2001-2004 then went to Texas for one year before being hired as the Head Coach at Iowa State where he's accumulated a saucy record of 5-19. So between Auburn and Tennessee, they've hired two head coaches with a combined 10-34. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in alumni and fans that these two teams will meet in the SEC Title game next year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A co-worker dropped their phone down a toilet at the Palms. Literally. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apparently Dublin, Ireland isn't all that cold during the winter. It's just a different kind of cold. 12月9日 TAPSI've done some pretty cool things in my life as far as I'm concerned.
I've traveled to the UK about a half dozen times, gone to a strip club with a group of lesbians, been to a national title game for my alma mater, and tonight, I heard TAPS being played at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.
It's something that doesn't happen everyday.
During my time here I also met Spc. Tracey. A skinny white kid who has 5 years in the ARMY. He was injured in Afghanistan multiple times ( I told him to duck in the future) the last one left him with both elbows shattered.
But that's not what got me. What got me is the fact that he came down to the office and said "I just wanted to thank the guys for comin" meaning, he wanted to thank the fighters and anyone else involved for coming to Ft. Bagg and having a fight.
My man.
He left today to go back to Michigan and continue his rehab. He won't see the fight live but he will have met, Randy Couture, Mike Swick, Josh Koscheck, Kenny Florian, Marcus Davis and multiple other fighters on this card tomorrow night.
His elbows probably still hurt, but I just hope they hurt a little less over the last few days.
12月7日 And the impossible still hasn't happenedI lived in Austin, TX for a few years. And every time I heard someone say “UT” I would solemnly get my hopes up because I knew they were talking about the University of Texas and not the real UT of Tennessee.
Well for once I will take the side of the other UT. The Texas Longhorns got steered out of a chance to win the national title. Don’t get me wrong, Florida vs. Oklahoma is a helluva football game but so would be Florida vs. Texas.
The fact of the matter is this and it’s no secret where I stand on the issue, College Football needs a playoff and needed it 15 years ago.
By the way, did you notice how the guys on ESPN suddenly this season decided NOT to talk about a playoff? Why, well I’m sure that the 4 year deal worth an estimated $500 million had nothing to do with that.
The saddest thing is that the people who lose are not only the fans but the smaller schools like UTAH and Boise St. And the only reason I can see that college football won’t do it is because of money. How lucrative the bowl’s are to the conferences and the schools.
Are they telling me that a Division 1, oh excuse me, and FBS, couldn’t make a boat load of money on this? And you can still keep the bowl system intact by playing all the games in the current bowl venues. The littler bowls could still be used for those awesome 6-6 teams that somehow qualify for postseason play. But in the end, everyone could make out.
Yet this will not happen for a long, long, time. And to put how ridiculous this really is, an African-American has been elected President (by the way, he wants a playoff) and we still can’t have a Division 1 or FBS playoff. WTF? WTF? 12月2日 Where do we go from herePhil is out and Lane Kiffin is in. The 33 year old wildcat whose only head coaching experience came with a 5-15 mark with the Oakland Raiders. I watched the press conference the other day and he seemed nervous (rightfully so) but he did say the right things. He did seem open to the tradition and legacy that Coach Fulmer and others have built at Tennessee. He also said something along the lines of beating Florida which I'm all for. I know he's suppose to be this awesome recruiter but so was the last Raider coach to come to the college ranks. Bill Callahan at Nebraska and for as well as he was supposedly recruiting Nebraska went downhill. Just a note to Coach Kiffin, you don't need the best players you need the right ones. On another note, Gene Wojciechowski wrote an awesome article about Fulmer's last game. I'm glad to see Fulmer go out with so much class and people really trying to enjoy the moment. It sucks to not be in that neck of the woods right now. One legend leaving and a hot shot guy coming in. I can only imagine the press, the talk radio, the conversations at the bar. I'm really interested to see how Kiffin does and if I can really follow it well being on the Left coast. |
