Up All Night

There are few musicians or singers that I would like to be Up All Night with. Fortunately for me one of them is DJ Rap who's latest release is entitled Up All Night. I suppose the musical Gods are smiling on me.

Up All Night is another step down the glorious drum and bass road for DJ Rap aka Charissa Saverio. The record is not the frantic pace of her last release Bulletproof. This record is more organic. More along the thought lines of chillin at the resort with this being your soundtrack. Soothing dance music with frantic beats.

The first four tracks ("Bella Fortissimo", "Heavenly", "Angels and Demons", and "High Octane") really set this mellow groove into orbit. DJ RAP then turns up the notch a little with "Drummin' and Bassin'" but it is Feel It that announces to you that a shift is here. "Feel It" is, I think, the best track on the record. It has so upper atmosphere vocals along with a down to Earth ripping guitar to drive it home.

"Feel It" leads into the second half of the record which is more along the lines of DJ RAP's Bulletproof record. Heavier drum and bass with changes in the song structure. It's not bad but what makes this record worth buying is the first half of it.

Up All Night is the best record DJ RAP has done. It improves upon her last record, Bulletproof, and goes a step further. I hope that she continues this trend and her next release is even better. I also hope that the next time she stops in Las Vegas that I get to stay Up All Night with her...and her music.

White Stuff

I haven't had a white Christmas since I can remember. In fact, I may never have had one. I really didn't think I was ever going to get one now that I live in Las Vegas.

Boy was I wrong.

It snowed here Sunday night. Someplace's got more than others but we all got some. I had to do a double take of my car that morning to make sure it was actually snow and not frost or a drug deal gone bad.

It snowed in Las Vegas before Christmas. It's a mad, mad World.

10ft is getting closer.

A saying in the online world is the "10ft rule". It is the idea that you can look at a video on your computer screen from 10ft away, or as we say in Bradworld, the couch.

Expanding on my expereince at the Video Game Awards experience I went around and tried to find some of the other online media folks to, not only see what they did but how their sites show thier video.

Some sites did a better job streaming their video then they did presenting their video. The Weekend Gamer has a big ass screen but their navigation is not that good and the content itself needs an editor. Gametrailers.com or GTTV is cooler. It has a little bit smaller screen but a the production value is much better. The GTTV Weekley segments are good the host, Amanda Mackay who I got to interview, is hot and their red carpet re-cap from the VGA's is pretty good. Good video and production value.

Some other sites I still think lag behind but the point is this, most, if not all of the video can be viewed while sitter further away from your computer screen. Add in the fact that these sites probably get no where near the traffic that ESPN does and you can view the videos without worrying about it re-buffering every few seconds. Granted that doesn't itake into considereation your own connection but you get the idea.

Could we be soon at that 10ft rule? I think so and in some cases I would make the argument that we are already there.

Saturday

Today is the first day I've actually woken up in my own bed and not had to A) catch a plane B) go to work or C) watch football all day. It is a little strange.

I got back from San Diego on Thursday mid morning and went straight to work. Worked unitl 10pm Friday and at about 3pm on Thursday I realized that I hadn't shopped for xmas yet while realizing I really need a haircut.

But enough about me.

Last week at the Video Game Awards (yes I was on the red carpet and it was my first time. Was a little rough but the fruits of my labor can be seen here in a day or so) but I was blown away by how many online folks were there. How many video online folks too. Using cameras from the tinest of the tinest to a Canon XL2 that looked like the Titanic (I remember when that came out, it seemed just the right size to me. Now it seems huge). All interviewing celebrities and game designers from here to next Thursday. Sites like the Weekend Gamer, Game Trailers, G4, Ecko, and of course me. I would venture to say that the online media out numbered the traditional broadcast and cable folks.

F**k LA

I grew in Stockton, CA. I’m not a fan of the town however I will take Stockton any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Los Angeles.

I was in LA for business for about 24 hours this past Friday and went from LAX to Universal City which took about 45 minutes to an hour.  I left for the event I was going to an hour and half early because I knew it would take me at least that long, which it did. Think about that for a minute: It took me 1 ½ hours to drive about 18 miles.

Coming home from this event, the Video Game Awards on Spike TV took me about 30 minutes. Yes, 10:45pm at night and it was bumper to bumper traffic on the 110.

Add in the decaying structures that have been desperately maintained and end up looking like an architectural face lift and you get an idea about the soul of this city.

Oh wait; let’s not forget the paparazzi; the photo guys and gals waiting for Celebes to walk in backstage so that they can get a shot for People or Cosmo or whatever. Seriously, these folks live up to every cliché in the book. From bad accents, thinning hair, and bad terms to get the Celebes to look their way (“Love your trophy”) and I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Either way it was bad.

Needless to say, having to fly out on Untied was like pouring salt into an open wound. I spent more time in line getting an e-ticket than going through security. I travel a lot now and that is exact opposite on every other airline I fly. The poor people at United were overworked and severely understaffed. They hopefully will got bought out by Southwest or do travelers a favor and go out of business.

Needless to say that was my 24 hours in LA. I’m happy their over.

No German Coach For You

Well that couldn't make it work for whatever reason. Juergen Klinsmann has withdrawn his name from consideration to be the next head coach of the US National Team.

As recently as yesterday it looked like a done deal. Klinsmann, who lives in Huntington Beach and is married to an American, even ended his deal with Adidas so that there would be no conflict with the US National Team sponsor NIKE.

It was the worst kept secret in soccer, Klinsmann as the next US National Team Coach. Klinsmann turned the traditionally defensive Germany team into an offensive powerhouse and a 3rd place finish in this summer's World Cup. It was believed that he would bring the same style to the US team and also, possibly, give other players an opportunity.

Now it appears that Bob Bradley, head coach of CD Chivas USA of the MLS, will be the interim head coach. Bradley will likely get the job in my view unless some other coach becomes available or Klinsmann changes his mind.

No disrespect to Bradley but I hope Klinsmann changes his mind.

The New and the Sold

I haven't been blogging a lot but then again I have a real job now.

What's new:

CNBC launched a new web site that isn't bad. I haven't had a lot of time to explore it but I like how it's video intensive and the FLASH. Nice search.

Yahoo! announced major shake up. I've heard smoke about it possibly being bought by Microsoft but I think that idea is UP in SMOKE. Comcast maybe IF Yahoo! was looking to sell which it isn't to my knowledge.

CNET editor James Kim's body was found in the Oregon wilderness. His wife and two daughters were found alive Monday. Kim left on Saturday to find help. The family went missing the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. It is sad but at the same time interesting to see how the online community is reacting.

A HALO 3 trailer aired during Monday Night Football on Dec. 4th. Think about that for a minute, a video game trailer during a MNF game and there is no release date for the game. All we know is that it is coming out in 2007.

Oh No, Someone Has To Think

I was watching the Big 12 Championship Game between Nebraska and Oklahoma and the color guy Todd Blackledge said that he didn't like a playoff because it would the destroy the current bowl system and he didn't like that. Using the bowl's as a playoff system would destroy the bowl system and people would have to think differently about everything.

Well damn. Heaven forbid that University Presidents use their heads. My God, changing tradition we can't have that!

Of course if traditions were never changed then the SEC would have 12 teams and a Championship game, The Big 12 wouldn't exist, and the Big 10 would still have 10 teams (why they still call themselves the Big 10 when there are 11 teams is beyond me).

Now don't get me wrong I am all for tradition but when it can't be touched or modified for traditions sake then I say tradition needs to go. It's not like there isn't precedence in modifying tradition.

Tennessee and Alabama play every year and usually on the 3rd weekend of October but not always. Now when the SEC expanded to 12 teams and split the conference into the divisions Tennessee and Alabama were in different divisions. So what did they do? The SEC worked out a schedule where the traditional rivals continued to play each other every year like Tennessee and Alabama and Georgia and Auburn. The SEC them rotated in two other teams from the other division to round out the in conference schedule.

The Big 12 on the other hand ended long time tradional rivalry games like Nebraska vs Oklahoma. I guess Blackledge didn't think about this when he made his comments.

By the way, two of the lamest arguments against a playoff in division 1-A college football are academics and money. Yeah, like the 108+ people at a Tennessee game are concerned about the academic welfare of the players. Besides, all of the other divisions of college football have a playoff system and last time I checked Furman was harder to get into then Tennessee or Oklahoma.

Money. If you think that a playoff system in 1-A wouldn't make money then you're either a communist or an idiot. This would be as big of a money maker as the Super Bowl and the NCAA Basketball tournament.

GIVE US A PLAYOFF NOW!
